The ancient art of miniature is so called because of the minutia of its strokes, a product of the mastery of artisans, armed with a brush made of a single squirrel hair. For instance in the Padshahnama, where a guard's thumbnail shows a chipped nail, the stitching in a robe reveals a tear hastily mended. In the court ateliers of Rajasthan, particularly under aharana Jagat Singh of Mewar, painters created scenes of courtly life where even the dust kicked up by horses was rendered with individual specks of pigment. Much loved internationally and once hoarded by museums, many iconic works are now mothballed in these same museums, rarely if ever on display. This project of DIL SAAZII navigates copyright permissions to resurface some iconic artworks.
